:: AMAZONAS
The Department of Amazonas was inhabited by the influent Chachapoyas or Sachapuyos culture. Its stone constructions, temples, fortresses, terrasses, tumbs, ceramics and cities testify of the great level of progress reached by that civilization. The Kuelap fortress is their major legacy. In the Province of Luya, both the Chipuric and Revach cultures (800 to 1,200 A.C.) developped in parallel.
The funerary bundles and necropolis found in the area, constitute important vestiges of touristic interest. In 1475, the region was annexed to the Inca Empire and later on, was conquered by the Spanish who founded the city of Chachapoyas, on September 5, 1538. From then on, it converted itself in the capital city of the Peruvian East.
