PASCO
About 10,000 years ago, the first humans arrived to these regions. Long after, human groups appeared in Ranracancha (Yanahuanca). Between about 200 B:C: and 900 A:C:, the region was under the influence of the Wari Empire. After that culture´s decline, the Taramas, Huancas and Yarovilcas, invaded the South and center of the Cordillera. The silver and gold mines that gave the region its renoun, were already known and worked by the Incas when the Spaniards arrived.
By the mid 16th century, the profusion of these mines attracted many Spanish settlers who arrived there, accompanied by missionaries. Later on, it was these men who founded the villages of the Department of Pasco. In 1960, Pasco received the title of “Peru´s Mining Capital City”. |
