AYACUCHO
Ayacucho is the City of Churches. In fact, there are more than 36 of them, all preciously decorated with silver and golden altars.
Its Main Square and its portals show a serene beauty. Moreover, one can visit the “Chumbis´ Warehouse” and Vilcashuaman, Yana Huajkra´s Reservoir, the Great Aquaduct of Huari, The Quinua Fields, as well as participate to the well known religious festivities of the Huanta Valley. Easter is famous in the Ayacuchan capital city.
The fossils found in the region, suggest that primitive men had settled in Ayacucho since before 16,000 years B.C. and we know that the Huamangas were present there since ancient times.
Then, the “Wari” culture developped in the Huanta Province, ´till it was assimilated by the Incas´ territorial expansion. During the Colony, the city of Ayacucho was founded under the order of Pizarro, in 1539. In 1677, was founded the San Cristobal National University of Huamanga. Finally, it was with the Battle of Ayacucho, on December 9, 1824, that Peru´s independence was consolidated.
